About Tree Nurseries
Growing forests isn’t simple.
Tree nurseries are a key component in a complex supply chain that includes seed collection, processing, storage, seedling stock production, planting agencies, landowner outreach, long-term monitoring, follow-up treatments and reporting.
The Industry
The Canadian tree nursery sector plays a vital economic role in addition to its ecological contributions.
The Canadian Government has some of the strictest forest laws in the world, requiring the forest industry to fulfil a legal obligation to regenerate their harvested areas. Currently, approximately 600 million seedlings are grown annually by Canadian tree nurseries to support this effort from coast to coast to coast.
It takes two to five years for nurseries to grow seedlings for forest restoration purposes. This requires significant long-term investment by the nurseries for both staff and infrastructure to ensure the right trees are available when required. It is therefore essential that tree nurseries play a key role in the planning of all forest restoration efforts locally and nationally.
